Cardinals Game Brings Military Families Together

ST. LOUIS (KTVI) ? On the 3rd-annual ?This One`s For You? night at Busch Stadium, Fox Sports Midwest gave military families a Memorial Day weekend to remember.? The network helped them enjoy a game with loved ones at war, even while they were thousands of miles apart.

Tameka Podwoski was so excited, you would think her husband David Podwoski won another World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals.? Instead, he is fighting for his country as part of the 463rd Military Police Detail out of Ford Leonard Wood.

?My husband is stationed at Bagram, Afghanistan,? she yelled.? ?He is a solid warrior with the 463rd.? Wooooo!? Go solid warriors!?

FSM helped those warriors say hello from a war zone in the Middle East.

?He`s actually not met him yet,? Robin Murr talked about her husband, as she held her infant son.? ?He left a week before he was born.?

The network let their families do the same from St. Louis.

?Hi Daddy,? the Murrs tried to coax his big brother, still a toddler, to greet his father through television cameras.

FSM set up a satellite feed so loved ones could enjoy a cards game together.? Missouri National Guardsman Lance Dell enjoyed the same night with his family two years ago.

?It`s always good to see family,? Captain Dell explained, safely in the stands of Busch.? ?And it`s kind of a sweet and emotional because you want to be home with them.? But then again, you`re getting to see them on TV and especially a Cardinal game.? It`s great. ?

?I could see first-hand that he was okay,? Mitzi Dell remembered.? ?It made me tear up.? I cried a lot during that game, just seeing and knowing that we were that close and yet that far away.?

There wasn?t a dry eye in Busch, not even in the broadcast booth.

?It`s a lot of fun,? explained announcer Al Hrobsky.? ?But I`ve got to be honest, sometimes it can be a little embarrassing because I get quite emotional.?

That?s okay.? FOX2/News 11?s George Sells found that Podwoski was emotional, too.?? She didn`t cry.? She cheered.

Podwoski:? ?I thought this was great!? This is why I came, to see my husband for the first time in six months on TV, so this is a big deal for me.?

George:? ?And there`s very little chance he`ll miss you I assume.?

Podwoski:? ?Very little chance.? Very little chance.? Woo!?

The Cardinals and Budweiser are always working to support military families.? For every walk-off home run this season, Budweiser will donate $5,000 to the ?Walk Off a Hero Initiative?.? The program raises educational funds for the families of vets injured or killed in action.
