December 26, 2003 & 2004: Earthquake of Bam & Indonesian Tsunami

Sunday December 26th, 2004 seemed to be another sunny day on the island of Sumatra (Indonesia) and in the early morning only slowly the shores became frequented by tourists and locals. At 7:58:53 local time a strong earthquake was felt, lasting unusual long with 8-10 minutes it caused however minor damage. But the magnitude 9.1-9.3 earthquake had displaced an estimated 1.600 kilometres long segment of the seafloor by 15 metres. The water column above this segment was first pushed up and generated then a series of four waves travelling in opposite direction.

Video 1. The tsunami in the Indian Ocean is probably one most well documented disasters in modern history, the accounts and video footage helped to understand what happened in the various phases and how a tsunami propagates on land. ?Tsunami: Caugth on Camera? is a TV-documentary produced in 2009 almost exclusively with original footage (the video shows victims and injured people ? viewers discretion is advised).

Fifteen minutes after the earthquake, at 8:14 local time, the first wave reached the coast of Sumatra without a warning. In Thailand it was the trough of the wave to reach first the coast. Eyewitness accounts and video footage shows how the sea level first regress, large parts of the shores and even reefs emerge, then suddenly a huge and fast wall of water approaches. Video footage showed also how the first wave cleared the path for the later ones, that even faster and stronger hit the interior areas along the coasts.

The waves travelled for 8 hours trough the entire Indian Ocean, bringing destruction and death to the coasts of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar and flooding almost completely the smaller islands in the Indian Ocean.
The death toll rose in the following hours and days after the catastrophe ? more than 230.000 fatalities were counted, possibly thousands of bodies remain either lost to the sea or unidentified, even more people injured and large areas devastated.

Almost one year earlier, in the morning of December 26th, 2003, the 142.000 inhabitants counting city of Bam in the Iranian province of Kerman was hit by 12 seconds lasting magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Protecting and overlooking the city was the mighty citadel of Arg-e-Bam, build during the reign of the Safawida-dynasty in the years 1501-1736. The citadel was constructed in old times with bricks of clay and straw mortar. Many buildings in the modern city were still constructed with similar materials ? a typical house, often with many floors, had a heavy roof of concrete resting on walls of simple bricks. This type of construction, the main weight of the construction is situated high above the ground, free to shake and resting on a weak support, is very unstable even during a moderate earthquake. In seconds 80% of the buildings in Bam collapsed and many sleeping inhabitants were surprised inside their houses by the quake. More than 26.000 people died and 120.000 people lost their homes.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: movie review (VIDEO)

Wrenching and at times exploitive, 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' takes on 9/11 events as seen through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy.

In the 10 years since 9/11, debates have periodically raged about whether it was ?too soon? to make movies about that awful event. ?United 93,? which came out in 2006, was the official "Is It Too Soon" movie and now we have ?Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,? based on Jonathan Safran Foer?s bestselling 2005 novel ? which was, of course, criticized at the time for being too soon.

I favor the notion that you make a movie when you make a movie and you let the chips fall where they may. There can be no timeline for this sort of thing. ?Extremely Loud? has the advantage of a decade-long perspective on the events of that day, but at its most powerful ? not often enough, alas ? it brings back in a rush all the pain and sorrow.

The film follows a highly precocious 11-year-old New Yorker, Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn), whose father Thomas (Tom Hanks), a jeweler who was visiting one of the Twin Towers on 9/11, is killed during the attack.?

Oskar and his father had a wonderfully chummy relationship. His bond with his mother (Sandra Bullock) is more distant.

To make some kind of sense out of the tragedy, Oskar, who narrates the movie, sets himself an impossible mission. Discovering a key in an envelope marked ?Black? in his father?s closet, he decides to find the lock it opens by tracking down all 472 people named Black listed in all the boroughs of New York.

Most of the time his encounters are brief and dismissive. In a few instances, such as the one involving a woman named Abby (Viola Davis), he finds himself innocently walking in on a domestic crisis.

After a while Oskar acquires an ally in his quest ? an old man, known only as ?the renter? and played by Max von Sydow, who lives down the hall from Oskar?s grandmother (Zoe Caldwell). This dignified and mysterious gent is mute by choice; everything he says is written down on a notepad. It is Oskar?s strong suspicion that the old man is actually his long-lost grandfather.

Oskar?s precocity and obsessiveness is linked to a possible diagnosis of Asperger?s. (?Tests were inconclusive,? he dryly comments in voice-over.) He?s a wearying kid, and Horn ? who is himself a prodigy and a champ on the junior edition of ?Jeopardy? ? can be a wearying actor. (It?s his first movie.) He never lets up. No doubt this has a lot to do with the way Stephen Daldry directed him. Still, the film?s title could just as easily apply to Oskar as to 9/11.

Amid this beehive of overacting, the nuanced, damped-down performances of Von Sydow and Davis, though she only has a few scenes, are like a balm. (Hanks and Bullock are good, too, though their screen time is likewise brief.) But the central dynamic ? Oskar?s search for meaning in his father?s death ? is obscured by the boy?s frantic odyssey, which quickly takes on a life of its own untethered to 9/11. It is only near the end, when Thomas?s increasingly panicky phone messages from that day are played out, that the film hits home.?

How could it fail to? Daldry and his screenwriter Eric Roth make the mistake of showing bodies falling from the Twin Towers ? it?s a mistake because its graphic power seems more exploitative than cathartic ? but they otherwise thankfully refrain from pulling out all the stops. They don?t need to. Grade:?B- (Rated PG-13 for emotional thematic material, some disturbing images, and language.)

Richmond police said in a Tweet late Saturday: "2-year-old Kaiden Burnside is OK. Found alone inside SUV off Jennie Scher Road. Thanks to everyone for assistance."

City police spokeswoman Karla Peters told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/svXlqT ) the child was found sleeping alone in the parked vehicle.

"He's being checked out by EMS and will soon be reunited with his mother," Peters said.

Authorities late Saturday identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jamal Louis Clemons of Richmond, Va. They say Clemons is wanted for abduction, robbery, robbery with a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony by a convicted felon.

Richmond city police said in a press release that shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of two persons down and found an adult man and an adult woman inside a Church Hill residence. Both had been fatally shot.

Witnesses reported that a man fled the scene inside a 2012 white GMC Terrain SUV that was left with the motor running and the boy strapped in the back seat, the news release said.

The Virginia State Police issued an Amber Alert at 9:39 p.m. EST Saturday for the boy, identified as Kaiden Gage Burnside. They described him as having short blond hair and blue eyes, and wearing a red plaid shirt, a cream-colored vest with a red truck carrying a Christmas tree, dark green corduroy slacks and white light-up sneakers.

"The child is believed to be in extreme danger," the alert said.

City police described the suspect ? later identified as Clemons ? as a black man in his mid- to late 20s, 5-foot-8 and 150 to 160 pounds, with black hair and wearing dark jeans and a black zip-up sweat shirt with a hood. He is believed to be armed with a revolver.

"We don't believe that he knew there was a child in the back seat," Richmond police Maj. Steve Drew told the newspaper.

Police said they didn't believe the shooting was random but have not released additional details about the victims or their potential relationship to the suspect.

Officers continued to search early Sunday for the suspect.

Richmond police did not return repeated calls from The Associated Press on Saturday evening.

Smart Guide to 2012: The US cyber election

The way we live our lives online will make it easier for US presidential candidates to target their message

Read more: "Smart Guide 2012: 10 ideas you'll want to understand"

Do you live in Ohio and tweet about your church? The Republicans would like to have a word with you. Live in California and post pictures of your Toyota Prius? Barack Obama would like you to start a fundraising page.

The US presidential election in November 2012 is likely to be the most data-intensive campaign in history. The reason? We are sharing more information about ourselves - our interests, social connections and online behaviour - than ever. Savvy candidates can increasingly use this data to predict how we are likely to vote, which of us to target and how best to reach us.

In 2008, Obama's campaign used online social networks to not only get the word out, but also to track which issues groups of voters cared about most. They built computer models of voting districts that helped determine where to best focus money and volunteers during last minute, on-the-ground campaigning.

2012 could see campaigns bring this kind of data-assisted decision-making to the level of individual voters. Campaign strategists have long combined voter registration data with consumer databases and census information to construct voter profiles consisting of thousands of variables, such as the size of someone's house, or what magazines they read. Now these profiles can be beefed-up with real-time analysis of political sentiment via Twitter and blog posts.

Detailed information about individual voter interests and key political issues could also allow campaigns to craft narrowly targeted messages. Do you tweet about your love for Battlestar Galactica? Don't be surprised if the political messages you see online through banner ads or sponsored links are tailored towards a candidate's stance on science or space exploration.

Whether this kind of customised campaigning comes across as charming or creepy remains to be seen. But with about half of all Americans now on Facebook, voters will have to get used to campaigns using their information in all kinds of ways. Combine these huge data sets with sophisticated prediction algorithms and 2012 could mark the rise of the ultimate political machine.

Astronomers discover deep-fried planets

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Two Earth-sized planets have been discovered circling a dying star that has passed the red giant stage. Because of their close orbits, the planets must have been engulfed by their star while it swelled up to many times its original size.

This discovery, published in the science journal Nature, may shed new light on the destiny of stellar and planetary systems, including our solar system.

When our sun nears the end of its life in about 5 billion years, it will swell up to what astronomers call a red giant, an inflated star that has used up most of its fuel. So large will the dying star grow that its fiery outer reaches will swallow the innermost planets of our solar system ? Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.

Researchers believed that this unimaginable inferno would make short work of any planet caught in it ? until now.

This report describes the first discovery of two planets ? or remnants thereof ? that evidently not only survived being engulfed by their parent star, but also may have helped to strip the star of most of its fiery envelope in the process. The team was led by Stephane Charpinet, an astronomer at the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plan?tologie, Universit? de Toulouse-CNRS, in France.

"When our sun swells up to become a red giant, it will engulf the Earth," said Elizabeth 'Betsy' Green, an associate astronomer at the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory, who participated in the research. "If a tiny planet like the Earth spends 1 billion years in an environment like that, it will just evaporate. Only planets with masses very much larger than the Earth, like Jupiter or Saturn, could possibly survive."

The two planets, named KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02, circle their host star in extremely tight orbits. Having migrated so close, they probably plunged deep into the star's envelope during the red giant phase, but survived. In the most plausible configuration, the two bodies would respectively have radii of 0.76 and 0.87 times the Earth radius, making them the smallest planets so far detected around an active star other than our sun.

The host star, KOI 55, is what astronomers call a subdwarf B star: It consists of the exposed core of a red giant that has lost nearly its entire envelope. In fact, the authors write, the planets may have contributed to the increased mass loss necessary for the formation of this type of star.

The authors concluded that planetary systems may therefore influence the evolution of their parent stars. They pointed out that the planetary system they observed offers a glimpse into the possible future of our own.

The discovery of the two planets came as a surprise because the research team had not set out to find new planets far away from our solar system, but to study pulsating stars. Caused by rhythmic expansions and contractions brought about by pressure and gravitational forces that go along with the thermonuclear fusion process inside the star, such pulsations are a defining feature of many stars.

By studying the pulsations of a star, astronomers can deduce the object's mass, temperature, size and sometimes even its interior structure. This is called asteroseismology.

"Those pulsation frequency patterns are almost like a finger print of a star," Green said. "It's very much like seismology, where one uses earthquake data to learn about the inner composition of the Earth."

To detect the frequencies with which a star pulsates, researchers have to observe it for very long periods of time, sometimes years, in order to measure tiny variations in brightness.

"The brightness variations of a star tell us about its pulsational modes if we can observe enough of them very precisely," Green said. "Let's say there is one pulsational mode every 5859.8 seconds, and there is another one every 9126.39 seconds. There could be lots of stars with rather different properties that could all manage to pulsate at those two frequencies. However, if we can measure 10, or better yet, 50 pulsational modes in one star, then it's possible to use theoretical models to say exactly what the star must be like in order to produce those particular pulsations."

"The only way to do that is to have a telescope sitting in space," she added. "On Earth, we can only observe a star at night. But unless we follow it 24/7, the mathematics give us artifacts. Observing through the atmosphere means that even in the very best of cases we can only detect brightness variations to a ten-thousandth of a percent. But if you've got 50 or a 100 modes going in a star, you need to measure better than that."

For that reason, the team used data obtained from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope for this study.

Unobstructed by the Earth's atmosphere and staring at the same patch of sky throughout its five-year mission, the Kepler Space Telescope sits in a prime spot to detect tiny variations in brightness of stars.

Green had been pursuing a survey to look for hot subdwarf stars in the galactic plane of the Milky Way.

"I had already obtained excellent high-signal to noise spectra of the hot subdwarf B star KOI 55 with our telescopes on Kitt Peak, before Kepler was even launched," she said. "Once Kepler was in orbit and began finding all these pulsational modes, my co-authors at the University of Toulouse and the University of Montreal were able to analyze this star immediately using their state-of-the art computer models."

This was the first time that researchers were able to use gravity pulsation modes, which penetrate into the core of the star, to match subdwarf B star models to learn about their interior structure.

While analyzing KOI 55's pulsations, the team noticed the intriguing presence of two tiny periodic modulations occurring every 5.76 and 8.23 hours that caused the star to flicker ever so slightly, at one five thousandth percent of its overall brightness. They showed that these two frequencies could not have been produced by the star's own internal pulsations.

The only explanation came from the existence two small planets passing in front of the star every 5.76 and 8.23 hours. To complete their orbits so rapidly, KOI 55.01 and KOI 55.02 have to be extremely close to the star, much closer than Mercury is to our sun. On top of that, the sun is a cool star compared to KOI 55, which burns at about 28,000 Kelvin, or 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

"Planets this close to their star are tidally locked," Green said, "meaning the same side always faces the star, just like the same face of the moon always faces the Earth. The day side of Mercury is hot enough to melt lead, so you can imagine the harsh conditions on those two small planets racing around a host star that is five times hotter than our sun at such a close distance."

The extremely tight orbits are important because they tell the researchers that the planets must have been engulfed when their host stars swelled up into a red giant.

"Having migrated so close, they probably plunged deep into the star's envelope during the red giant phase, but survived," lead author Charpinet said.

"As the star puffs up and engulfs the planet, the planet has to plow through the star's hot atmosphere and that causes friction, sending it spiraling toward the star," Green added. "As it's doing that, it helps strip atmosphere off the star. At the same time, the friction with the star's envelope also strips the gaseous and liquid layers off the planet, leaving behind only some part of the solid core, scorched but still there."

"We think this is the first documented case of planets influencing a star's evolution," Charpinet said. "We know of a brown dwarf that possibly did that, but that's not a planet, and of giants planets around subdwarf B stars, but those are too far away to have had any impact on the evolution of the star itself."

"I find it incredibly fascinating that after hundreds of years of being able to only look at the outsides of stars, now we can finally investigate the interiors of a few stars ? even if only in these special types of pulsators ? and compare that with how we thought stars evolved," Green said. "We thought we had a pretty good understanding of what solar systems were like as long as we only knew one ? ours. Now we are discovering a huge variety of solar systems that are nothing like ours, including, for the first time, remnant planets around a stellar core like this one."

Trump: Romney 'doesn't get the traction' in race (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Real estate giant Donald Trump says former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney "doesn't get the traction" he needs to nail down the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump, who will moderate a GOP candidate debate on Dec. 28, says Romney struggles to stay in front, saying "I don't know what it is."

Trump tells NBC's "Today" accusations that Romney flip-flops on issues are absurd, saying "we all change our minds on things."

He brushed aside decisions by both Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman to stay out of the debate, calling them "joke candidates."

Trump says "a lot of Republicans, top Republicans, asked me to do the debate." And he also says that if he isn't satisfied the GOP is putting up a viable candidate against President Barack Obama, he'd again consider running himself.

FILE - In this Jan. 4, 2008 file photo, former Major League Baseball player Lenny Dykstra poses for a portrait in New York. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, a judge declined to issue Dykstra a restraining order against a man operating his Twitter account, citing "free speech issues." (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II, File)

(AP) ? Lenny Dykstra struck out in an attempt to get a restraining order against a man the former baseball player allowed to run his Twitter account and claims is now threatening his finances and freedom.

Dykstra's attorney sought a restraining order against Pennsylvania resident Daniel Herman, claiming the man has contacted federal prosecutors handling the ex-player's embezzlement case and told them he is a flight risk. Dykstra also claimed Herman has posted racist and demeaning messages on Twitter and has falsely represented himself as his business manager.

Dykstra claimed Herman has "threatened me physically and has been trying desperately to incite violence against me via posting of racist and malicious Twitter messages to 8,400-plus followers," court filings show.

Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson rejected the request for an order, stating there are "freedom of speech issues." In a handwritten ruling, she stated, "You allowed him to manage your Twitter (account). Close it down or clarify any false statements."

Dykstra spent 12 years in the big leagues, earning the nickname "Nails" for his tough play and helping the Mets to the World Series championship in 1986. He was a three-time All-Star in the 1990s with the Phillies.

Goodson also noted that she couldn't stop Herman from contacting federal prosecutors or any other public agency.

Dykstra's complaints are "primarily a business dispute" and should be handled with a civil lawsuit, the judge wrote.

Herman could not be reached for comment.

Dykstra is currently on bail in a fraud case in which he is charged with selling or destroying items that were under the jurisdiction of a bankruptcy court.

His filing states Herman attempted to sign a documentary deal on Dykstra's behalf and told a Philadelphia radio station that the former player is guilty and that he had "Free Nails" T-shirts signed by Charlie Sheen to sell. "None of these statements were true."

Dykstra, who has pleaded not guilty, faces up to five years in prison if convicted in the fraud case.

Dykstra, who bought a mansion once owned by hockey star Wayne Gretzky, filed for bankruptcy two years ago, claiming he owed more than $31 million and had only $50,000 in assets. Federal prosecutors said that after filing, Dykstra hid, sold or destroyed more than $400,000 worth of items from the $18.5 million mansion without permission of a bankruptcy trustee.

His restraining order request also sought protection for his ex-wife and three sons.

Tameka Foster Demands Drug Test for Usher

Tameka Foster is intent on proving that Usher is an unfit father.

The singer's ex-wife filed papers in court last week that allege a number of indiscretions by Usher, most of them based on the way he has treated Tameka, not the way he has been toward his two sons.

Usher and Tameka Pic

But now Foster is raising the accusatory ante, demanding a judge force Usher to take a drug test ASAP because she believes he's been popping pills around the pair's children. Usher has refused to take this bait so far, deeming his ex's claims to be "frivolous and unfounded," merely meant to "harass and embarrass" the artist.

As a result, lawyers are now involved and Tameka's side is urging the legal system to act quickly, lest Usher have the chance to "cleanse" his body of all foreign substances.

We'll see how this turns out, but right now it's clear Usher did the right thing by cleaning his life of Tameka, isn't it?

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? Thousands of fans stormed the field and tore down goalposts after Oklahoma State's 44-10 victory over archrival Oklahoma, leaving at least 13 people injured, including two in critical condition, an emergency medical official said early Sunday.

Michael Authement, who heads the command post at emergency medical provider LifeNet EMS, told The Associated Press that a throng so big took to the field as the game ended that some fans were trampled and one person fell at least 15 feet onto concrete during a wild celebration by Oklahoma State fans.

"They won the game and stormed the field and ripped down the goalposts and some were jumping off the stands and hit the field and others got trampled. It was a nasty deal," Authement said.

He said the crowd was so big it took police at least 45 minutes to clear the crowd from the field at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

"There were thousands of people. Thousands of people stormed the field. You couldn't move there were so many people," he added.

Authement said nine ambulances, including six from LifeNet, rushed 11 of the injured away and the two in critical condition were flown to Oklahoma City hospitals. He said he knew of leg fractures but didn't have any details on the extent of the injuries, though two of the 13 had minor injuries and were treated at the scene and released.

An Oklahoma State University police central dispatcher said she had no immediate details to release when contacted by AP and the public information officer did not immediately return messages seeking comment. Stillwater police and the Oklahoma highway patrol also had no immediate comment.

98% The Muppets

All Critics (139) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (136) | Rotten (3)

You can rest easy - if you have previously loved the Muppets, you will likely currently love The Muppets.

The chorus of one of the songs declares, 'I've got everything that I need, right in front of me.' For 120 minutes, that's precisely how I felt.

[Filmmakers] hew close to the essential innocence informing the Muppets' silliness.

The Muppets is a triumph of simplicity, innocence and goofy jokes. It's a triumph of felt.

A mixed bag then: The Muppets isn't the best or the worst of Kermit's big-screen capers. At least it's a reminder that here's one frog who isn't about to croak.

It's nice to see the band back together. And when Kermit busts out the banjo for "Rainbow Connection," you might even go for your lighter.

The movie is better when the muppets are front and center and not the humans

Actor-writer Jason Segel happily plays a supporting role and lets a new generation be introduced to Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and Animal.

Admittedly, there are a few misfires every once in a while, but with its barrage of self-referential humor, breaking through the fourth wall jokes, imaginative cameos and satirical winks at Hollywood conventions, The Muppets is a comedy lover's dream.

Longtime Muppet fans will undoubtedly have more fun than young ones, but for the most part, it's a witty, delightful romp.

... older folks raised on the late Jim Henson's brainchildren will be charmed ...

Not all nostalgia is created equal.

One of the movie's real pleasures is the 'reality' of its puppety ethos -- our awareness that Segel and Adams really are talking to Kermit and Piggy, and not to a blank space that will be filled in later by an animator.

There's still an endearing sweetness that permeates The Muppets.

The Muppets marks a triumphant return for these beloved characters. This movie made me feel good all over.

A bit flat and never quite as madcap or wacky as the TV show or early films, The Muppets hits enough right notes to be a pleasing welcome back for longtime fans and a lovely introduction for those deprived of Muppets magic.

It is a film that works for...fans who remember what the Muppets were but it's also a great way of establishing who the Muppets are.

Wonderful! Delightful! Utterly charming!

Frequently hilarious and quite poignant, especially when Kermit reminisces about his long lost friends while crooning a wonderful little ditty called "Pictures in My Head"

It is with immense pleasure that I can report that Disney's Muppet reboot movie is an absolute delight.

The whole thing is ultimately too in awe of its own characters, respecting them without pushing them, to feel as fresh and sharp as The Muppet Movie.

Here's a cruel suggestion: Leave the kids at home. After all, what grownup weaned on a steady diet of Muppets wants to interrupt a jaunt down memory lane by having to escort weak bladders to the bathroom or hungry mouths to the concession stand?

Dear Muppets: Thank goodness you're back. And thank goodness for the pens of Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller, who wrote this brilliant screenplay to get you back on the big screen where you belong.

Where have they been? Young or old, there's nothing better than spending a few hours with the Muppets.

its mixture of nostalgia, postmodern humor, and all-around generosity may be exactly what is needed to endear the Muppets to a whole new generation

SAP to pay $3.4B for SuccessFactors (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? SAP said Saturday it is paying $3.4 billion to acquire SuccessFactors, a software company specializing in human resources tasks. It is the latest move in the escalating rivalry between SAP and Oracle Corp., and underscores the increased interest in technology companies that deliver software over the Internet, or in the so-called "cloud."

The deal calls for subsidiary SAP America Inc. to pay $40 per share in cash for SuccessFactors. That is a 52 percent premium over SuccessFactors' closing stock price of $26.25 on Friday. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012.

SAP AG is one of the world's biggest business software makers. The German company's specialty is business applications, such as those used for payroll and managing relationships with customers and suppliers.

SuccessFactors, based in San Mateo, Calif., is a big maker of cloud-based human resources applications. The company focuses on applications for managing relationships with employees, such as organizing and developing performance reviews and bonuses. The company says it has more than 3,500 customers. It lost $12.5 million on $205.9 million in revenue last year.

"The cloud is a core of SAP's future growth, and the combination of SuccessFactors' leadership team and technology with SAP will create a cloud powerhouse," Bill McDermott, an SAP co-CEO, said in a statement.

The deal is part of the growing rivalry between SAP and Oracle. Oracle's push into SAP's turf of business applications has been a multibillion-dollar affair. Oracle's boisterous CEO Larry Ellison has pursued big-ticket acquisitions that have made his database software company a major player, behind SAP, in many different realms of the business software world. SAP is the dominant maker of business applications.

The feud has gotten personal. Oracle won a $1.3 billion jury verdict against SAP last year over the widespread theft by a now-shuttered SAP subsidiary of documents from password-protected Oracle customer websites. Oracle alleged the information was used to steal business. A judge threw out the award, calling it "grossly excessive" and setting the stage for a retrial.

Oracle landed a publicity jackpot from the trial. Ellison used it to repeatedly shame SAP publicly. SAP admitted the theft and agreed to pay $20 million to settle criminal charges filed by the Department of Justice over the former subsidiary's practices.

Apple official statement: Siri?s lack of abortion info isn?t intentional (Yahoo! News)

Omission of clinics doesn't indicate an anti-abortion stance, says Apple

Siri, the iPhone 4S's new voice assistant, can be?incredibly helpful and?incredibly silly, but one of the things it can't do is causing an uproar among abortion and women's rights activists around the country. The accusations have been flying around the internet for the past few days, as people point out that Siri will help you find a hooker or the closest bar, but asking it to find an abortion clinic or birth control will give you a big fat zero. Is Siri pro-life, people asked?

Not surprisingly, Apple has now?steadfastly denied any claim that Siri has any opinion on the subject. The voice assistant, Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris points out, is still in beta release, which means that it still has many bugs to be worked out. "These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks," she said.

As?TUAW reporter Chris Rawson notes, one possible reason for the lack of responses is that Siri gets a lot of her business information from Yelp, rather than relying on competitor Google. A quick Google search for abortion clinics will yield several possibilities, depending on where you're searching, but they aren't the sort of businesses that tend to get reviewed on Yelp very often. A more targeted query ? requesting the location of the nearest?Planned Parenthood, for example ??tends to bring up results consistently through both Siri and Google.

Abortion is a touchy subject no matter how you look at it, so it's not surprising that Apple felt the need to respond to the accusations. The company was very careful not to hint at a stance for or against it; they simply pointed out that Siri is still a work in progress, and hopefully people won't overreact too much to issues which were coincidental at best.

Samsung DoubleTime (AT&T)

The Samsung DoubleTime ($49.99 with contract) has a hidden surprise inside: a full QWERTY keyboard with a secondary display, turning it into a micro-laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver the performance to go with its ambitious look. Even if you absolutely need a keyboard, you can find a better smartphone?on AT&T than the DoubleTime.

Design, Screen, and Keyboard
The DoubleTime measures 4.5 by 2.5 by .6 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.2 ounces. Made entirely of white plastic, it feels solid, if a bit low-end. The 3.2-inch external display is 320-by-480 pixel resolution, which is starting to look a bit grainy in comparison to the higher-resolution displays that can be found on many new devices. The glass capacitive touch screen is bright and suitably responsive, and there are four physical function keys below the screen.

Unlike many keyboarded phones, which slide to reveal a physical QWERTY keyboard, the DoubleTime flips open to reveal a keyboard and secondary screen. The keyboard itself is pretty good, with four rows of well spaced, large keys. Above the keyboard are four function keys, since you don't have access to the ones on the front of the phone. The keys are a bit flat, but you grow used to typing on typing on them quickly.

The second touch screen is the same as size and resolution as the primary screen. The problem is, it's extremely awkward to interact with. The screen is set back too far, and angled so it's much less pleasant to use than a phone that features just one screen and a slide-out keyboard, like the Samsung Captivate Glide?($149.99, 4 stars). And it's not like the second screen doubles your productivity. When the keyboard is open the primary screen goes black.

Call Quality, OS, and Apps
The DoubleTime is a tri-band HSPA 7.2 3G (850/1900/2100 MHz) and quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It functions as a mobile hotspot to provide wireless access to up to five different devices with the appropriate service plan.

Reception is average, and call quality is just OK. Voices sound clear and understandable in the phone's earpiece, but volume is extremely low. The speakerphone is just loud enough to use outdoors, but voices sound somewhat distorted. Calls made with the phone feature good noise cancellation, but voices are thin. Calls sounded much better through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked well. Battery life was good, at 8 hours 31 minutes of talk time. But overall this is a phone for typing, not talking on.

The DoubleTime is powered by a 600MHz Qualcomm S1 CPU and runs Android 2.2.2 (Froyo). Now that Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has finally landed, that places this device two steps behind the current generation. That endangers the DoubleTime's compatibility with new apps and exiles it from the latest features.

That 600MHz processor is growing long in the tooth as well. Though once a staple of midrange Android phones, it lags behind new devices. Though the DoubleTime benchmarked on par with other low-end Android phones, you can feel a lag in performance even when swiping through home screens.

Raiders get 6 FGs in 25-20 win over Bears

Sebastian Janikowski

By JOSH DUBOW

updated 9:47 p.m. ET Nov. 27, 2011

OAKLAND, Calif. - Missing some of their biggest playmakers and unable to get the ball into the end zone for much of the day, the Oakland Raiders managed to hold the Chicago Bears and their fill-in quarterback in large part because of their kicking game.

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a team-record six field goals, Shane Lechler had an 80-yard punt and neutralized ace returner Devin Hester and the Raiders took advantage of three interceptions from Chicago's Caleb Hanie to beat the Bears 25-20 Sunday.

"Those guys are game-changers," quarterback Carson Palmer said. "There's not many punter-kicker combinations in the league ... they're can't be a better one."

Janikowski made field goals of 40, 47, 42, 19, 37 and 44 yards to break the team record he shared with Jeff Jaeger.

Lechler controlled field position all game with a 49.2 yard net average, pinning the Hester and the Bears inside the 20 on three of five punts and booming the team-record 80-yarder over his head with a boot that generated "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd and his teammates.

The only remaining ties to the Raiders teams that won three straight division titles from 2000-02 were a major reason why Oakland (7-4) remained alone in first in the AFC West.

"Our two kickers are fantastic," coach Hue Jackson said. "There's not another punter or kicker in the National Football League I would ever want to have on the football team. I said to the team when this was over, those were the two men who were here the last time this team was 7-4. Those guys have a lot to do with it. They did a tremendous job."

Palmer threw for 301 yards and Michael Bush iced the game with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lead the Raiders to their third straight win against a Bears team missing starting quarterback Jay Cutler.

Hanie struggled in his first career start for the Bears (7-4) in place of Cutler, who broke his right thumb last week in Chicago's sixth straight win to put a major obstacle into what had been a promising season.

Hanie, who nearly led a comeback in last season's NFC title game, had thrown only 14 regular-season passes since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and looked like a career backup for much of this game.

Hanie completed 18 of 35 passes for 254 yards and three interceptions, including a crushing one late in the first half when the Bears were deep in Oakland territory and on the verge of taking the lead.

"I was a little antsy early on," Hanie said. "A little bit too amped, I feel like. Just kind of felt a little pressure and sailed it on him."

But Hanie also threw two TD passes, including a 5-yarder to Kellen Davis with 2:11 to play that cut the deficit to 25-20. That was set up by an 81-yarder to Johnny Knox.

The game ended when Hanie botched a spike play with 4 seconds left at his 46. Instead of immediately spiking the ball to stop the clock, he took an extra step back and hesitated, leading to a game-ending intentional grounding call.

"We should have won that football game based on the way our offense played," linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "We didn't play well enough on defense. We gave up too many big plays, didn't get enough takeaways. That's why we didn't win."

Bush was held to 69 yards on the ground by Chicago's strong defense and Palmer was sacked four times and threw an interception as the Raiders missed injured big-play threats Darren McFadden, Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore.

But they made up for it on special teams, headed by Janikowski and Lechler. The Raiders did not shy away from the dangerous Hester, holding him to 7 yards on two punt returns. He didn't get a chance on the 80-yarder as Lechler sailed it over his head once he saw the returner creeping up too far.

"I caught him in a vulnerable position," Lechler said. "It was going to be all or nothing and it was all."

Hanie managed to drive the Bears into field goal range on that drive and Robbie Gould's 53-yard field goal cut Oakland's lead to 18-13 with 7:17 to play.

The Raiders answered with Palmer throwing a 47-yard pass to Louis Murphy on third-and-4 from midfield to set up Bush's 3-yard TD run with 3:47 remaining.

Hanie's three first-half interceptions put the Bears in a 12-7 hole despite his 29-yard TD pass to Knox. The Bears had a chance to take the lead when they drove to the 7 late in the first half.

Hanie attempted a throwback screen to Davis that was tipped by Aaron Curry and went right to Kamerion Wimbley, who returned it 83 yards before being dragged down by a horse-collar tackle by Lance Louis. Oakland settled for a 19-yard field goal.

"We knew coming into this game that he lacked experience but we knew that he could still make plays, as you saw in the Green Bay title game last year," Routt said. "We knew he still had the ability to make us look bad and come out of here with the W if we didn't take care of business."

Notes: Bush's TD gave Oakland's its first points in the fourth quarter since Oct. 9 at Houston. ... Knox had 278 total yards with 145 coming on his four catches and 133 on four kick returns.
