The Patrick-Murray Administration today has honored participants in the Department of Developmental Services' (DDS) Urban Youth Collaborative Program (UYCP). More than 200 young people were recognized at the State House event Aug. 9 for their participation in the UYCP this summer, working with individuals with developmental disabilities at state-operated programs and at developmental centers throughout the state.

?I am impressed by the efforts of these amazing young leaders through the Urban Youth Collaborative Program,? said Gov. Deval Patrick. ?Their commitment to serving the people of the Commonwealth makes them incredible role models for the next generation.

The UYCP, now in its 21st year, introduces young adults to the field of human services, helps build an experienced workforce for the future and supports efforts to reduce the stigma associated with developmental disabilities. DDS manages Urban Youth Collaborative internship programs in?Boston, Cambridge/Somerville,?Fall River,?New Bedford, Fitchburg/Leominster,?Lawrence,?Lowell,?Quincy,Brockton, Springfield/Westfield, Holyoke/Chicopee,?Worcester?and the Central/Western region of the state.

The UYCP began in?Boston?in June 1992 as a collaborative effort between?Madison?Park?High Schooland Bay Cove Human Services, with the goal of attracting young adults from diverse backgrounds to careers in human services.

The program has since expanded statewide, with interns placed at state-operated programs, developmental centers and non-profit organizations across the Commonwealth in full-time summer jobs, providing support to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Some employers have partnered with local colleges to offer course credit to interns participating in the program. Since its inception, more than 3,200 interns have taken part in the UYCP, with nearly half choosing to pursue careers in human services.

"The strategy really is about getting as much sampling for the shows as possible," said Vernon Sanders, NBC Entertainment executive vice president. He called it a reflection of a "real philosophical shift about how to premiere shows."

That includes a more aggressive effort to give freshman series a jump start on the fall season, which officially begins in mid-September, by posting them online early, holding screenings ? or, when an Olympic Games is handy, "putting them in the biggest launch pad possible," Sanders said.

This Olympics have exceeded 30 million nightly viewers for a majority of its prime-time telecasts and bested the ratings of the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. The higher-than-expected ratings have "thrilled" the network, Sanders said.

Using a gold-plated platform to sell its fall schedule is a temptation NBC shouldn't resist, said analyst Brad Adgate of media-buyer Horizon Media.

"They're going to have 200 million viewers watching across 17 days, and it's a wonderful promotional showcase for the new lineup," Adgate said.

But it's not a surefire one. Case in point is Jerry Seinfeld's "Marriage Ref," which received a splashy debut during the 2010 Winter Games. NBC even interrupted the closing ceremony, inviting viewers to return for the final minutes of the Olympics after sampling "Marriage Ref."

The move was derided by at least one observer as spectacularly wrongheaded, but "Marriage Ref" was sampled by an impressive 14.5 million viewers. A few weeks later, however, the audience had dwindled to fewer than 4 million.

"It's one thing to get viewers to watch the premiere of a show. It's another to get them to watch in the ensuing weeks," Adgate said.

A former cast mate of Perry, Matt LeBlanc, can attest to the uncertain outcome of Olympic-sized promotion. "Joey," LeBlanc's spinoff from "Friends," was heavily trumpeted during the 2004 Games but struggled through an unimpressive two-season run.

Another also-ran was "Father of the Pride," a much-anticipated DreamWorks animated comedy that debuted after the '04 Olympics to an audience of 12.4 million. It went on to average a lackluster 7 million weekly viewers and lasted one season.

There's a potential attention gap facing "Go On" and "Animal Practice," which won't return until next month to claim their regular slots. "Go On" will begin airing at 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Sept. 11, with "Animal Practice" starting 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 26.

But don't expect NBC to ease off on its marketing efforts when the Olympics are over.

The new drama "Revolution," for example, which received a roughly two-minute sneak peek Monday night (after a previously announced six-minute preview that was scheduled for Saturday fell through), won't be in hiding until its debut at 10 p.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 17.

The trailer was posted online, and the first episode of the post-apocalyptic drama from producer-director J.J. Abrams of "Lost," ''Fringe" and the big screen's "Star Trek," will preview starting Sept. 4 on-demand and online through cable and other providers, NBC.com, Hulu and additional websites.

John E. (Jack) Nail, a successful Harlem realtor, was born in New London, Connecticut in 1883.? His parents, Elizabeth and John B. Nail, moved to New York City where the senior Nail bought a hotel, restaurant, and billiard parlor after working for a time in a gambling house.? His entrepreneurial endeavors made an early impression on John as he was growing up.?

John Nail graduated from a New York public high school and worked briefly in his father?s hotel.? In 1904 he began working as a salesman at the Afro-American Realty Company, a firm headed by Philip A. Payton and based in Harlem.? The Afro-American Realty Company, anticipating the migration of African Americans from central Manhattan to Harlem, encouraged black homeowners and business owners to relocate in the area.? Nail, through the Afro-American Realty Company, also helped unite black renters and white landlords and aided a number of the earliest black residents of Harlem in finding new homes in the area.?

Payton?s Afro-American Realty?s vision of the move uptown proved premature.? As the company began to experience financial difficulties in 1907, Nail and another company salesman, Henry C. Parker, opened up their own realty business in Harlem, Nail and Parker Associates.? They also anticipated the migration of Manhattan blacks farther north and in 1911 Nail began advising middle class black New Yorkers to purchase property in Harlem.? Nail also argued that black ownership in Harlem would permanently undermine discriminatory real estate practices commonly directed against both African American homeowners and renters.?

In 1911, Nail and his pastor, Rev. Hutchens C. Bishop of St. Philips Episcopal Church, made a series of real estate purchases in Harlem totaling $1,070,000.? These deals, helped by Bishop?s ability to pass for white, allowed land for a new church and for church-owned apartment buildings that would be rented out to tenants.?As blacks increasingly moved into Harlem after 1915, Nail and his associates purchased more property.? Despite the emphasis on home purchases, Nail soon realized that most new black Harlemites were hungry for, and could only afford, apartments.? By 1925, Nail and Associates owned and managed around fifty apartment complexes and had an annual income of $1 million.? They also helped to develop Harlem by funding the Harlem branch of the YMCA, helping small businesses in the area, and building up Harlem?s local bank.

John Nail became the wealthiest and most influential black realtor in New York City.? He held seats on numerous state and local boards, including the Real Estate Board of New York and the Housing Committee of New York where in each case he was the only black member.? His advice was solicited by President Herbert Hoover?s Commission on Housing.? Nail also contributed to the Harlem community through charities, political influence, and organizations aimed at uplifting the community including the New York branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the National Urban League.?

John Nail envisioned Harlem to be the new capital of the black middle class, an idea that seemed likely in the 1920s. When the depression hit Harlem, Nail and Parker Associates went bankrupt in 1933.? Nail tried to start successor companies but was never able to see his goals accomplished.? By the 1930s, Harlem had become an area of teaming tenements filled by working class African Americans rather than an area of individually owned homes.? John E. Nail died on March 5, 1947 in New York City.

Truth be told, the novel brought itself to life. The creative process was backwards, if not accidental, and the end result probably breaks every rule of writing there is. I never intended to write a novel, but at the end of the day, it has been a worthwhile journey, and the ?unique? book that came out the other side of the process is doing pretty well so far. ?

As the story goes ?

?

A few years ago, I was in the UCLA professional screenwriting program, trying to learn about film through writing one, so I could be a better producer.?

?

Day 1 or so, Professor Hal Ackerman told us to get out a notebook. ?Write down the main characters and first 15 scenes of your movie. Ready go.? Hal was teaching a fast and furious writing technique he calls ?snowplowing.?

?

I was stunned.? Movie? Write? Write what? I had no idea what to write. I didn?t even know where to start, in fact. That didn?t matter, we were off to the races, and everyone else was writing.? Ready go. OMG. LOL. WTF. Seven seconds of panic later, I brainstormed scene #1 ? Sebastian and his buddy Wolf.? Two German soldiers stuck in a church as the Russians close in to kill them off.

I guess.?

?

You see, I just finished a great book by Anthony Beevor about the Battle of Berlin (history buff), so this choice made perfect sense for a movie idea at the time.? Or so I thought.

?

Then came more panic. It dawned on me. I just chose two German soldiers in WWII as the protagonists, aka typically the most evil and vile characters in any war movie since 1939, and most certainly in real life.? Possibly the worst creative choice in the history of screenwriting since The Invasion of the Killer Tomatoes got a green light.?

?

Unfortunately, Hal didn?t give us time to change anything.? Ready go. Wolf and Sebastian were my protagonists and it was time to write the [bleep] inciting incident. Ready go. OMG. LOL. WTF. Inciting incident?? Ummm.? Okay. The ? they ? the soldiers find a young shell-shocked girl wandering the ruins, and they save her life. Or she saves them. Eva. But Eva is a vampire.?

?

Once I got past the panic, the supernatural mystery and thriller elements came into play and I figured out how to make the My Immortal protagonists make sense and work. The screenplay took on a life of its own, and then when it was done, the story was unique, to say the least, and it won the Best Screenplay Award at the Terror Film Festival, the first contest it was entered into.

?

I was feeling great about the vampire project, but months later the reality of getting a World War II screenplay read in Hollywood set in. Frankly, sight unseen, My Immortal was viewed as just another expensive period piece.? In fact, the first manager and agent I spoke to about the script literally LOL when I said ?World War II.?? True story. Even though My Immortal was different than anything I had read or seen in the genre, there was some sort of wacky force field barrier to entry to the script based solely on the time period, so people weren?t reading it.? WTF.

Time for Plan B. Which was not surrender.

?

I was antagonized, and knew I had to find a way to introduce the concept of My Immortal to people that did not involve putting it under a stack of 700 scripts and hoping for the best ? aka hoping someone reads it, and then hoping that person who reads it, understands from that one reading that this project is not ?Downfall with vampires.?

?

So I decided to write the novel.

?

Frankly, the reality took longer and was far more difficult than the theory.? In fact, I would?ve never started had I known how [bleep] hard it was going to be. ?There were fun parts of course, especially travelling to Berlin and Prague to retrace the physical journey of Sebastian and Wolf.?

?

I am very proud of this book, but it was a difficult writing and editing process, and I have a lot of respect for anyone who has ever written a novel.

?

As many of you know, in a screenplay, you can write, ?Character A enters building.?? And then you?re done as the writer.? With a novel, you?re not done. You didn?t even find your keys yet, let alone drive the car over to the building to enter. One way or another, you still have to describe the building, what the character is sensing or feeling, wearing etc. It?s a completely different game and writing experience, moreso than I expected.

?

The good news is that writing the novel transformed the My Immortal story (and screenplay) into something much better, more vibrant and dynamic, and was a fantastic creative experience, albeit a grind when it came time to edit.

?

As the story goes, I self-published My Immortal: The Vampires of Berlin last year.? It sold well, and I was lucky enough to get a book signing at the horror bookstore Dark Delicacies, paired with famous vampire-book author Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. ?

?

Kaboom. Lightening struck in Burbank that day.?

?

Entertainment Weekly Magazine surveyed Dark Delicacies, and ranked My Immortal #3 for best selling horror fiction in their April 11, 2011 issue. Shortly thereafter, I signed with 23 House, the one publisher that really understood the creative direction of the project.

Just as Klaus began the muscle contractions on his index finger to shoot, Sebastian moved at lightening speed and tackled him. Dieter jumped onto Sebastian?s back, but ended up on the ground next to his grandfather a split-second later. With his growing strength, Sebastian could have easily killed them both. Instead, he held them down just hard enough to prevent them from hurting someone.

Unnoticed during the m?l?e, Eva knelt down and put her hands on Axel?s face. She closed her eyes as a soft blue glow emanated from her palms. The horribly burned pilot moaned and tried to push her away as the light grew brighter, but Eva kept her hands firmly on him.

Dieter noticed the light. ?Stop!? he yelled. ?She?s hurting him!?

Eva took her hands away from Axel and crumpled to the ground.

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Kids with a serious food allergy generally have to steer clear of the offending food, but methods now under development could change that common scenario.

More than 3 million American youths -- about one of every 25 -- have a food allergy of some sort, usually to milk, eggs or peanuts, according to U.S. government statistics. For them, "avoidance has been the mainstay of treatment for a long time," said Dr. William Silvers, an allergist in private practice in Vail, Colo., and a spokesman for the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

"Now what we're seeing is an increased interest in oral immunotherapy," Silvers said. "This means giving small and slowly increased doses orally of foods that children are allergic to, and building up the amount ingested over time to desensitize the child to the food so they can tolerate it."

That doesn't come string-free, though. Dr. Carla Davis, an allergist at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, noted that once children have been desensitized to a certain food, they have to continue eating it regularly or they'll become allergic to the food again.

"There isn't a maintenance of tolerance if you avoid the foods," she explained.

Along with desensitization, another potential new treatment for food allergies is a drug called omalizumab (Xolair). Silvers said that it works by blocking the activity of the allergy-causing substance known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) so that an allergic reaction never starts.

However, the food allergy would come back if a person were to stop using the drug, which is currently available only in an injectable form and has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in children younger than 12.

Some researchers, though, think that a combination of the two treatments might be better than either alone. Early reports from a very small study found that nine of 11 children who were given Xolair and then desensitized to milk were able to consume up to 12 ounces of dairy a day without a reaction.

Davis said that researchers also are testing herbal formulations and that one particular combination of nine herbs was able to prevent a serious allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, in mice. "It's another one of the treatments that may be up-and-coming," she said, though there's no evidence in humans yet.

What has been proven true, though, is that many kids simply outgrow their food allergies, even some of the most deadly ones. Davis said that as many as one in five youngsters may outgrow an allergy to peanuts but that allergies to eggs, milk, soy and wheat are most often outgrown. In general, peanuts, tree nuts and seafood allergies tend to stay with children as they grow, she said.

To know whether a child has outgrown a food allergy requires repeated skin and blood tests, Silvers said. "If IgE levels in the blood decrease over time, or if skin testing comes back negative or a very small reaction, a child or adult can be given a food challenge to see if they'll react," he said.

To be safe, though, the testing "must be done under a physician's supervision," Davis said, because a serious reaction could occur if the youngster has not outgrown the allergy.

For kids with lingering food allergies, Silvers recommended that the child or parent always carry the antihistamine Benadryl and an epinephrine injection pen. If it's suspected that the child accidentally ingested an allergy-inducing food, the youngster should take the antihistamine right away. If the allergic reaction worsens, administer the epinephrine and get to an emergency room as quickly as possible.

It's important to go to the hospital after a serious allergic reaction, Davis said, because there can be a second wave to the reaction about four to six hours later.

Many children have their own epinephrine pens at their school nurse's office. In Chicago, the public school system recently decided to take the next step and keep a supply of epinephrine pens in every school, and train school personnel in their use, so that they're prepared for any serious allergic reactions.

"This is a good idea because about one in five children have their first serious reaction in school," Davis said.

For those living with food allergies, Davis said, it's important to find a balance between being vigilant and being overanxious. Parents should be "prepared for a reaction, but shouldn't expect one all the time," she said. "Some parents become extremely anxious about the contact their child may have with food. Health vigilance is important, but so is quality of life."

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Aaron Rodgers was sharp in limited work and the NFL's replacement officials weren't shy about making calls - even unpopular ones - in the Green Bay Packers' "Family Night" scrimmage on Friday.

A crowd of 55,605 took in the sights at Lambeau Field, many of them getting their first look at the stadium's major ongoing construction project in the south end zone - including a massive new video board towering high over the field. The project won't be completed until 2013.

With the NFL involved in a labor dispute with its officials, Friday night's scrimmage featured some of the league's replacement officials, who came to Green Bay to work at Packers practices earlier in the week.

The replacement crew drew a rousing round of boos from the crowd for calling an excessive celebration penalty when several Packers players did a "Lambeau Leap" into the stands after running back James Starks scored on the No. 1 offense's first drive.

Officials didn't dare throw another flag after Rodgers threw a 33-yard touchdown to Greg Jennings later in the scrimmage, triggering another team-wide leap into the stands.

That certainly didn't mean the officials stayed quiet, as the scrimmage was marred by penalties on both sides of the ball, including several false starts.

Backup quarterbacks Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman split duties against the Packers' No. 1 defense on the second drive of the night, but couldn't find the end zone - although Coleman, a seventh-round rookie out of Tennessee-Chattanooga, completed a nice throw on his first attempt of the night.

Charles Woodson, who has sat out the event in the past, was not in uniform for the Packers so fans didn't get a glimpse of the veteran's potentially expanded role as a safety.

Punter Tim Masthay, who just signed a four-year contract extension with the team, put on an impressive display when the scrimmage was halted for punting practice.

MALONNE, Belgium (AP) ? About 1,000 people protested Friday the planned early release from prison of the ex-wife of a Belgian pedophile who aided her husband's abuse and murder of young girls.

The protest took place in Malonne, 45 miles (75 kilometers) southeast of Brussels, where a convent has offered to take in Michelle Martin, former wife of Marc Dutroux, who is serving life in prison. Martin was convicted of helping her husband kidnap, rape and kill several young girls in the 1990's. She also allowed two 8-year-old girls imprisoned in the basement to die of starvation while Dutroux spent four months in jail for theft.

Residents of Malonne said the idea of having Martin live in the convent was repugnant. "I don't understand how we can release someone who let children die in a cave," said Monique Pire.

The protesters said Martin should not be free to come and go from the convent, which is near three schools. They were not allowed to walk directly in front of the monastery. But in a side street with a view of the convent, they shouted and whistled, then released black and white balloons into the air.

The demonstration was peaceful.

Maxime Prevot, mayor of the nearby city of Namur, who is also responsible for Malonne, said he was concerned about Martin's possible arrival in the village.

"I notified the minister of justice about the public order troubles that are already happening, and for which I am responsible. So one can imagine the significance of the troubles that could happen if the decision is confirmed," Prevot said.

"And I told her it would be impossible for the city to guarantee the security of Michelle Martin and of the nuns, should she actually come to Malonne," he said.

Tommy Scholtes, the spokesman for Belgium's Catholic archbishops, told Associated Press Television News that the decision to take Martin in had been made solely by the nuns in the convent.

"Religious communities are relatively independent, so it means that by themselves they are able ? they have the right to decide who they can welcome," Scholtes said.

The case is one of the most sensational in Belgium's recent history. Dutroux, now 55, is serving a life term for kidnapping, torturing and abusing six girls in 1995 and 1996, and murdering four of them. Martin, now 52, was given a 30-year prison term in 2004 for not freeing girls Dutroux held captive behind a secret door in their decrepit, dirty basement in Marcinelle, 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Brussels.

Including the credit given for the time spent in prison before her trial, Martin has served 16 years of her sentence ? slightly more than half. She's expected to be released within weeks.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican congressman who's retiring in frustration over political gridlock says he hopes the institution doesn't have to hit "rock bottom" before people learn to work together.

Ohio's Steven LaTourette tells MSNBC it's more difficult for a reasonable person to get re-elected to Congress because "the red districts are turning redder and the blue districts are turning bluer."

The red-versus-blue theory came to prominence when political analysts began breaking down the electoral map in terms of blue states as Democratic-leaning and red states as Republican. LaTourette says Friday that voters haven't demanded enough. He says when Congress failed to make a deal on budget cuts, quote, "I didn't get one phone call. I didn't get one email."

He says people should have been saying, 'What's wrong with these chuckleheads.' "
