RIEMA: Get Flood Insurance Homeowners | WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - It's been almost two years since the March historic floods ravaged Southern New England leaving behind millions of dollars in damage.

In recognition of National Flood Awareness Week, the RIEMA is encouraging those with a home or business near water to buy flood insurance.

?Purchasing a flood insurance policy for your home or business is critical,? said RIEMA?s State Floodplain Coordinator Michelle Burnett.

She continued, ?It is also important to purchase the policy now as there is a 30-day waiting period before any new policy goes into effect. We do not want any Rhode Islander to be left without flood coverage when they need it most.?

Officials say only about three percent of the homes and businesses in Rhode Island currently have flood insurance.

For additional assistance you can contact RIEMA?s Floodplain Management Program at 946-9996 or visit http://www.riema.ri.gov/prevention/floods/ or http://www.floodsmart.gov
