Valve's Steam Machine prototype is tiny, potentially powerful

When Valve ships its own prototype version of a Steam Machine later this year to 300 beta users, those folks are getting relatively tiny and powerful gaming consoles. At very least, it'll have an NVIDIA GTX 660 (all the way through Titan), and anywhere from an Intel i3 CPU to an i7-4770. All prototypes come with 3GB of DDR5 RAM and a 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD for storage. A 450w battery powers the 12 x 12.4 x 2.9in. boxes, which is internal (no external power supply! alright!).

Valve says it isn't ready to show off the box just yet, but offers more details than the prototype's initial announcement: the prototype is built entirely from "off-the-shelf PC parts," and is "fully upgradeable." In fact, aside from the prototype's custom housing, Valve says, "anyone can go and build exactly the same machine." The company even plans on sharing the CAD files for the housing, should you wish to directly replicate Valve's efforts. The forum post also says we'll see the box soon, before the beta units head out to 300 lucky folks. Head below for the full range of specs.

Of course, the worry here is pricing. We still don't know how much any of this will cost, and it certainly smells like it won't be cheap. For example, Xi3's modestly powerful Piston gaming PC carries a $1,000 price tag. On the low end, just Valve's prototype's NVIDIA GPU costs around $200 (with the high-end Titan coming in around $1,000), which is to say nothing of the custom work required to fit said NVIDIA GPUs and Intel CPUs and everything inside a custom 12 x 12.4 x 2.9in. enclosure. If nothing else, beta users are getting a relatively pricey piece of tech for free -- an endeavor that no doubt engenders a lot of love from Valve's loyal community. What we'll see available for sale some time next year, however, may look a lot different than what we're seeing in this prototype.

Valve's Steam Machine prototype specs:
  • GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
  • CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
  • RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU)
  • Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
  • Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
  • Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high

Man sets himself on fire on the National Mall

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A man set himself on fire on the National Mall in the nation's capital as passers-by rushed over to help put out the flames, officials and witnesses said Friday afternoon.

The reason for the self-immolation was not immediately clear and the man's identity was not disclosed. But it occurred in public view, on a central national gathering place, in a city still rattled by a mass shooting last month and a high-speed car chase outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday that ended with a woman being shot dead by police with a young child in the car.

The man on the Mall suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the hospital, said District of Columbia fire department spokesman Tim Wilson.

He was standing by himself in the center portion of the Mall when he emptied the contents of a red gasoline can on himself and set himself on fire moments later, said Katy Scheflen, who witnessed it as she walked across the area. Police say they responded around 4:20 p.m. Friday.

Scheflen said the man was clearly alive as the fire spread, and passing joggers took off their shirts in an effort to help put out the flames. It was not clear who actually extinguished the flames.

A police department spokesman said the man was conscious and breathing at the scene. MedStar Washington Hospital Center tweeted that the man was taken there and he was in critical condition Friday night.

"There was not a lot people could do because it was a gasoline fire," Scheflen said.

She said he may have said something before he acted "but it was nothing intelligible." She said she did not see him holding any signs before he set himself ablaze.

She said there was another man with a tripod set up near him, but it's unclear if the man was filming the incident.

Lt. Pamela Smith of the U.S. Park Police, which is investigating along with the D.C. police department, said: "I'm not aware of any signage or any articulation of any causes."

The D.C. police department has dispatched its violent crimes branch, which responds to cases in which a person suffers serious injury.

Microsoft Surface 2: Why this tablet deserves a second chance

Why the Surface 2 deserves a second chance
Give it a second chance: Panos Panay, Microsoft Surface general manager, holds up the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 during the launch of their Surface 2 tablets in New York. (Picture: Shannon Stapleton/REUTERS)

Talking of cool, it?s one of life?s little mysteries that Microsoft?s Surface Pro, never really hit that particular sweet spot.

Ironically, all it seems it needed to make this cracking device fly from the shelves was substituting that small Window?s logo for an Apple, and instantly it would have been a winner.

Sadly that didn?t happen, although at the launch back in June 2012, Microsoft did take a leaf out the Apples bible of spin. They managing to create a Cupertino buzz and sufficiently stimulated demand, however it would appear that?they didn?t read enough pages, and almost immediately, the wheels started to come off. Unlike Apple, Microsoft didn?t actually have a product ready to sell.

This led to what any salesman will tell you is one of the worst things that can happen ? a vacuum. A period of time in which the punter was allowed to cool-off. Four months (and it may as well have been years) after the initial hype of the launch had faded you could buy a Surface RT. The Surface Pro then took another seven months to hit the the UK.

So go on, give the Surface ?a second chance ? it deserves it.

Even when you could buy a Surface, issues over production quality emerged. Some of the touch cover keyboards started to split after one day?s use ? ?never good news from a salesman?s point of view.

Perhaps then it?s no surprise sales have been slow. The company shipped about a million tablets in the first three months of 2013 according to research firm IDC, including about 260,000 of the RT version and 750,000 of the Pro version. This was enough to give it 2 per cent share of the tablet market in that first quarter. By the second, Microsoft tablets had dropped out of IDC?s top five.

Thankfully, never one to give up on a good idea (and I really think the Surface is a great idea) Microsoft are back with the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2.

On the surface, the new Surface?s look pretty much the same.?They are now marginally thinner and lighter with upgrades to processing power, display and camera resolution and software. But importantly it?s really been listening to its business users who, whilst happy with the product, were not that enamoured with the device?s battery life.

So Microsoft went back to the drawing board, took a deep breath and moved things around. The Surface Pro 2 had Intel?s Haswell chip added to it, which uses less energy. As a result The Pro 2 promises 75 per cent more battery life than the debut model. There?s also an optional power cover accessory that extends battery life even further.

As a bit of sugar coating, Microsoft says?any customers purchasing either device will receive free Skype calling to land-lines in more than 60 countries for one year, unlimited Skype WiFi on their Surface 2 or Surface Pro 2 at more than 2 million hotspots worldwide for one year, and 200 GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years. So go on, give the Surface a second chance ? it deserves it.

On the other hand, don?t forget ?the old Surface. With stocks to clear, you might get a bargain.

The Microsoft Surface pro 2 is seen during a news conferece in New York September 23, 2013 where it was introduced by Microsoft vice president Panos Panay in New York September 23, 2013. The tablet is a full laptop in a tablet design, said Panay, who added that the graphics performance is 50 percent better and its battery life 20 percent longer than its predecessor. The popularity of Black Science Fiction is rising | North Dallas Gazette

    Black Speculative Ficition

    Black Speculative Ficition

    By Stafford L. Battle

BlackNews.com ? October has been dubbed African American Speculative Fiction Month by a group of online enthusiasts. This was done to acknowledge the writers, artists, entertainers and independent publishers around the country and elsewhere who are producing science fiction narratives, performances and art featuring Afrocentric themes. African Americans also use October to celebrate the merger of science and the arts via AFROFuturism.

Speculative fiction encourages people to look beyond their day-to-day existence and consider new possibilities that could benefit and enrich their lives. AFROFuturism incorporates novels, short stories, comic books, graphic arts, music, dance, video and other artistic forms that embrace science fiction and fantasy ? for entertainment, encouragement and education.

The unofficial hub of African American speculative fiction is Atlanta, Georgia. During October for the last three years, the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History has offered readings, panel discussions, music and art demonstrating the Afrocentric involvement in science fiction and fantasy. Digital communities such as The Afrofuturist Affair, ?The Black Science Fiction Society? and ?The Black Author Showcase? have sponsored online and offline activities to promote Black sci-fi and fantasy not only during October but throughout the year. Black writers, artists, and filmmakers are gaining popularity as well as earning a few extra dollars. Book sales are low compared to urban romance and celebrity authors. But profitability is improving as more readers are exposed to Black sci-fi and fantasy. New titles are being published traditionally and independently. Conventions and special events are drawing larger, multicultural audiences who are anxious to meet new writers and artists as well as pay homage to established Black Science Fiction icons such as Samuel Delany, Steven Barnes, Walter Mosley, and LaVar Burton. There are several well attended Black oriented comic book conventions such as the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention in Philadelphia and ONYXCON in Atlanta.

According to public opinion and casual surveys at conferences and online, African Americans have moved beyond the desire to simply drink from a forbidden water fountain or live in a prestigious neighborhood outside of crowded urban centers; that was the past. People of African descent now can envision living on gravity-free space stations, traveling to distant planets or stars, building fantastic devices and molding new societies. Science and its literary kin, Speculative Fiction, is the catalyst for a dynamic and prosperous future.

Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to become a U.S. astronaut is currently working on humanitys first starship. Her goal: to help change the world by leading the effort to send and sustain humans in interstellar space travel within the next 100 years. It has taken NASAs Voyager spacecraft, the fastest man-made object to date, more than three decades just to penetrate the outer edge of the solar system to enter interstellar space. A conventional spaceship traveling to the nearest star, more than four light years away (25 trillion miles) would need 70,000 years to arrive at the destination. But the 100 Year Starship project is exploring techniques to reduce that travel time to a few decades or even hours.

In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Charles Frank Bolden, Jr., an African American, Marine Corps Major General, and an astronaut to be senior administrator of NASA that has a long-term ambition to land humans on the planet Mars. In a video published April 2010, titled ?NASA?s New Era of Innovation and Discovery?, Bolden said, ?We?re gonna turn science fiction into science fact.? Bolden told interviewers that one of the top goals he was tasked with by President Obama was to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math.? What better way to influence students to pursue interplanetary and hi-tech careers, than by offering visions of individuals who mastered the challenges of space and technology at the end of each television episode or the closing credits of a movie. An ambitious Black student has a much better chance of becoming a highly paid, prestigious scientist than being recruited by the National Football League or any professional sports league.

Entertainers such as Will Smith (I, Robot), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) brought to the public eye, heroic figures deep in the sci-fi genre. In reality, Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson takes us to the edge of the universe and beyond. He appears frequently on television and among enthusiastic live audiences at conferences and special events. These and many other like-minded individuals are to be considered as AFROFuturists who are changing Americas expectations.

Black people are not strangers to speculative fiction. In the early 1900s, writers such Pauline Hopkins, Sutton Griggs, Martin Delany and George Schuyler were publishing stories about people of color who were discovering lost civilizations, building ray guns and flying machines, conquering Europe and charting a revolutionary Black destiny. Their tales gave hope to communities that were suffering devastating racial inequalities purposely enforced to stunt progress and create a 2nd class citizenship. In 2013, African Americans face new road backs such as lack of satisfying employment and health disparities. AFROFuturists use art and science to encourage others to make dreams become reality.

Anyone can participate. Science fiction is not just a geeky, white male American concept. Women and men are writing, drawing and filmmaking. Africa has a new crop of science fiction writers. There are Islamic authors producing stories of the fantastic. Asian, Native American, and Latino graphic and literary artists are contributing. In fact, speculative fiction has probably been expressed in all human cultures.

Black Speculative Fiction Month for October 2013 has humble beginnings similar to the gestation of February?s Black History Month that began in the 1920s by Carter G. Woodson. But the Sci-fi movement is taking off? like a rocket. The payload includes ?Sword and Soul?, ?Steam Funk?, ?Afro Sci-Fi? , Weird Black Westerns and other subgenres. Welcome aboard.
