A new analysis has found that doing away with PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing for prostate cancer would likely cause three times as many men to develop advanced disease that has spread to other parts of the body before being diagnosed. Published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study suggests that PSA testing and early detection may prevent approximately 17,000 men each year from having such advanced prostate cancer at diagnosis.

PSA testing has come under fire recently as a potentially ineffective screen for prostate cancer. Last year a government panel reviewed the available evidence and concluded that PSA testing has little or no benefit and that doctors are finding and treating non-aggressive cancers that are not likely to cause symptoms or be lethal. Therefore, many men may be experiencing serious treatment side effects such as incontinence and erectile dysfunction for no reason.

To see what might happen if PSA testing were abandoned, Edward Messing, MD, of the University of Rochester Medical Center, and his team looked at information from the years immediately before routine PSA testing was done (1983-1985) and compared it to the current era of widespread PSA testing (2006 to 2008). The information for the analysis came from the nation's largest cancer registry, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The researchers were particularly interested in the records of patients who had advanced prostate cancer that had already spread to other parts of the body at the time of diagnosis. These cases are generally incurable and always cause significant symptoms very quickly if left untreated.

The investigators found that approximately 8,000 cases of prostate cancer had already spread to distant sites (i.e. -- metastases) at the time of diagnosis in the United States in 2008 (the most recent SEER year). Next, they designed a mathematical model that used pre-PSA incidence rates of metastatic disease from the mid-1980s to estimate the number of such advanced cases that would be expected to occur in 2008 if PSA screening had not been done. They predicted the number would be approximately 25,000, which is about three times greater than the number actually observed.

"Our findings are very important in light of the recent controversy over PSA testing," said Dr. Messing. "Although there are trade-offs associated with the PSA test and many factors influence the disease outcome, our data clearly indicate that not doing the PSA test will result in many more men presenting with far advanced prostate cancer. Almost all men with clinically apparent metastases at initial diagnosis will die from prostate cancer," he added.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the male population. In 2012 an estimated 241,740 new cases will be diagnosed and 28,000 deaths will occur. Prognosis depends on whether the cancer has spread, and the degree to which the cancer cells are abnormal.

WASHINGTON (July 30, 2012) -- A rat may never be man's best friend, but the Rugged Automated Training System (R.A.T.S.) research sponsored by scientists with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, in collaboration with engineers at West Point and the Counter Explosives Hazards Center, will determine if and how these animals can be trained to save Soldiers' lives.

In July, Barron Associates Inc., Charlottesville, Va. was selected for an award under the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program to develop and test a rugged, automated and low-cost system for training rats to detect improvised explosive devices and mines, said Dr. Micheline Strand, chief of the Army Research Office's Life Sciences Division, which manages the program.

"The automated system we're developing is designed to inexpensively train rats to detect buried explosives to solve an immediate Army need for safer and lower-cost mine removal," says William Gressick, senior research engineer and the project's principal investigator at Barron Associates. "Beyond this application, the system will facilitate the use of rats in other search tasks such as homeland security and search-and-rescue operations. In the long-term, the system is likely to benefit both official and humanitarian organizations."

Strand said, "If we can demonstrate that rats can be trained inexpensively to be reliable detectors, then this method would not only lower costs for the Army but would also create new opportunities for using animals to detect anything from mines to humans buried in earthquake rubble."

It is well established that animals are capable of identifying explosives at lower concentrations than abiotic systems. The Department of Defense currently relies on dogs as the animal of choice for explosives detection. The goal of this STTR program is not to replace the use of dogs, but to expand the Army's detection capabilities.

"Training dogs is very expensive. If we can significantly reduce the cost of a trained animal, then we could provide more animals to protect soldiers." Strand said.

Trained rats would also create new opportunities; rats can search smaller spaces than a dog can, and are easier to transport.

Landmines kill between 15,000 and 20,000 people a year, and continue to kill adults and children decades after a conflict ends. An automated system to train rats to find mines could accelerate worldwide efforts to clear mined areas and return mined land to farming or other productive uses.

This unscheduled move is just the latest in what has been a rather interesting saga surrounding London's Olympic flame. It started when one of the torches carrying the flame went out due to a malfunctioning burner on its way through the host country and had to be relit by a backup unit. Then, the cauldron's placement came under harsh criticism due to its position within a stadium, and could only be seen by those with tickets to the opening ceremony.

In a 2004 article from Wilmington?s local newspaper, the Star-News, one of the project leaders was quoted as saying, "Most of these [new urbanism] projects don't occur in markets the size of Wilmington.? Ever since the first modern Olympic games were held in 1896, athletes have worked hard to ?go for the gold.? Baron Pierre de Coubertin brought the ancient Greek Olympiad back to life to recreate the ideals of physical, mental and spiritual excellence demonstrated by the competitors there. This year, the athletes at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver continue this tradition. They?re training long hours, maintaining a positive attitude, and overcoming their fears ? all in an attempt to accomplish their personal best.

Although you may not be vying for any medals, you can learn about triumphing over worry from the stories of athletes around the world. Here are 8 obstacles to consider as you map out your own personal strategy for success.

Overcome fear of failure. For some, failure signifies humiliation and the loss of self-esteem. But when the goal is to perform to the best of your ability, you can feel good about yourself even when you don?t come in first place. As Coubertain stated in the Olympic creed, ?The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.? Stay focused on your growth and the steps you take, not the outcome. Canadian skier Alexandre Bilodeau personified this ideal. He envisioned his courageous brother as a role model and, in the process, won the gold medal in moguls.

Overcome fear of success. Does thinking about what might happen, after you actually achieve a victory, stop you in your tracks? Or do you worry that you won?t meet others? high expectations of you once you win? Believing you must perform perfectly sometimes stands in the way of achieving your goal. U. S. figure skater Evan Lysacek had to deal with this stress at the Olympics, admitting, ?I did have some extra pressure coming in as the reigning world champion.? He rose to the occasion and skated with passion and skill, winning the gold medal and savoring the experience.

Overcome fear of competition. Performance anxiety is a common and familiar phobia. Speed skater Apolo Ohno is no stranger to competition, having conquered his own fears and come away a champion, on both the short-track and the dance floor. Entering many races, he has already beaten the record for the most U.S. medals in the Winter Games. Ohno doesn?t always win, but he strives to perform to the best of his ability each time he competes. To overcome stage fright, there are many techniques you can employ: put the competition into perspective; do deep breathing and relaxation exercises; concentrate on your own actions, not those around you; practice, practice, practice.

Overcome fear of sacrifice. After 46 years of consistently taking the gold medal in pairs figure skating, Russia/U.S.S.R. was finally was shut out from the podium. How did China?s Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo manage such a feat? They endured considerable sacrifice along the way. The oldest skaters in Vancouver, they have been together for 18 years, married for the past three. After victories despite numerous injuries, they retired in 2007. But two years later, they put their marriage vows and personal life on hold in order to retrain, living in the athletes? dorms as they worked to fulfill their dreams of Olympic gold. As you set important goals for yourself, recognize that you too may need to give up some pleasures along the way.

Overcome fear of risks. In order to succeed as Olympiads, athletes need to conquer their fear of the unknown and go for the gold anyway. According to Canadian hockey great Wayne Gretzky, ?You miss 100% of the shots you never take.? Snowboarder Shaun White understands taking measured risks and won the men?s halfpipe gold medal by hard work and his readiness to take chances. Although he had already won after his first run, he chose to attempt his difficult, signature moves in a second run. Exuberant after accomplishing his ?Double McTwist 1260,? he said, ?I have fun, I have dreams, I have goals, and I?m just now trying to do them.? After your own preparation, outline the risks you?re comfortable taking and then follow through with gusto.

Overcome fear of change. With poor weather conditions in Vancouver, many events were postponed, throwing off schedules. Athletes had to mentally adjust to these shifts and still be ready to compete. One athlete who initiated her own change was figure skater Yuko Kawaguchi. She gave up her Japanese citizenship and moved to Russia to be trained by legendary coach, Tamara Moskvina. Although not medaling at the Games, she lived her dedication to her sport by her move. When you are forced to modify your own original strategy, don?t hesitate to put your Plan B into action. It just might be a winner.

Overcome fear of pain. Downhill skier Lindsey Vonn severely bruised her shin during training last month and feared it might prevent her from competing in the Olympics. But she tried anyway, saying before the race, ?It?s tough?I know what I have to do. I know how to ski. It?s just fighting the pain.? And fight it she did, winning the gold medal in the women?s downhill. After, she commented on her efforts, ?Nothing comes for free.? You may have your own pain ? physical or emotional ? to work through as you pursue your goals. Keep in mind the determination you need to succeed as you struggle to prevail.

Overcome fear of pleasure. Lindsey Jacobellis skid off course in the snowboard cross semi-finals, once more losing a chance at a medal. After her initial frustration, she shared her thoughts with reporters, ?I still can have fun in some way. I just felt like doing a nice, fun truck-driver grab, that?s the spirit that it is.? Other competitive snowboarders agreed with her attitude. Nate Holland commented, ?It?s not always about winning. It?s about fun, style, showing your stuff.? And Nick Baumbartner explained, ?It?s not about the finish?it?s all about the journey. It?s all about taking the wild ride.? So, even when you?re in the midst of a competition of your own, don?t forget to enjoy the process and have fun.

As you learn from the athletes of the winter Olympics and overcome your own fears, remember that ?you can?t score if you don?t take a shot.? Rely on your courage, endurance and sense of fair play as you meet your challenges and achieve success. You may not receive a gold medal but you can be a winner just the same.

My husband and kids love kale ? no, really they do! I wasn?t always a big fan myself, but I learned about the many virtues of this amazing veggie and got creative to find ways to enjoy it. I?ll share our family?s favorite recipes in this post, but first let?s talk about why we should adore this vegetable.

Getting to Know Kale

A member of the Cruciferae clan, which makes it kin to cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collard greens and cauliflower, kale is a descendent of the wild cabbage that grew in Asia Minor. My crazy roaming Celtic ancestors brought it to Europe around 600 BC, where it blossomed in popularity all over Europe into the Middle Ages. More of my adventurous ancestors (or folks like them) brought them to the US in the mid 17th century. This is one hearty plant that does particularly well in cold climates and the cooler seasons. I?m guessing this is part of its popularity.

According to WebMD, one cup of kale contains 36 calories, 5 grams of fiber, and 15% of the daily requirement of calcium and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), 40% of magnesium, 180% of vitamin A, 200% of vitamin C, and 1,020% of vitamin K. It is also a good source of minerals copper, potassium, iron, manganese, and phosphorus. Oh boy!

As it turns out, vitamins A, C & K are super antioxidants of the phytonutrient variety ? this is good. The particular phytonutrients ? carotenoids and falvonoids are particularly associated with anti-cancer qualities. Very good. Aside from an awesome fiber content, it also contains lutien and zeaxanthin compounds, which are excellent for eye health. according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a vitamin K-rich diet can reduce the risk of developing or dying from cancer. Excellent. There are other foods that contain vitamin K (spinach, collard greens, cheese), but none quite like hearty kale.

6 Ways to Love Kale

1. GD Meg?s Kale & Basil Pesto
Must give my daughter Mary credit for helping me come up with this one.

Ingredients

2 cups packed kale (stripped of the hard stems)
1 cup packed fresh basil
1/4 cup GD Meg?s cashew cheese
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/3 cup olive oil
3 cloves garlic (at least)
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon good salt

Instructions

Put everything but the oil in your food processor and get it going, adding oil slowly ? stopping to scrape the sides a couple of times.

2. GD Meg?s Gluten-Free Kale & Basil Pesto & Pasta YUM

Ingredients

Your favorite GF pasta
GD Meg?s Kale & Basil Pesto (above)
Capers
Sun dried tomatoes

Instructions

This one is really easy and fun and I have no idea what the measurements for anything are. It is up to you and your taste!

3. Saut?ed Kale

Ingredients

Bunch of kale, stripped of big stems and cut into bite-sized pieces
1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 ? 2 cloves garlic crushed
1 ? 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
Salt & Pepper to taste

Instructions

Put pine nuts in one layer on a baking sheet and bake @ 400 degrees for a few minutes (check and stir every couple of minutes, usually takes 6 ? 8 minutes). Heat up the olive oil in a large skillet, and add the garlic ? stirring for a minute. Then add the kale, stirring continuously till it starts to turn bright green (happens kind of fast) ? all on medium-high heat. Once it is a bright color, turn the heat down, add the remaining ingredients and try not to over cook it!

Security researchers have successfully fooled commercial iris-recognition scans with a computer-generated replica of a human eye, raising questions as to the effectiveness of such biometric systems. Generating the fake iris only takes a few minutes, and does not require the original eye to be present.

Iris scans have for years been considered a secure and fairly straightforward biometric security measure; existing scanners can collect quite a bit of information, building a model of the user's iris and comparing it against future scans. But the process is not without its weaknesses.

Several years of research at West Virginia University and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid have focused on how such a system might be defeated. The i-PRoBe lab at WVU has been looking into biometrics methods for over a decade, producing not just ideas for new systems but ways to circumvent existing ones. They were producing synthetic irises as early as 2005, though the mathematically generated images were more a proof of concept.

Javier Galbally, at UAM's Biometric Recognition Group, has pursued the practical applications of artificial irises, in particular the application to biometric security. In the research he and the others are presenting this week at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, they explain how they were able to create not just a convincing iris, but one that would return more or less the same result as a given real-life iris. Wired's Threat Level blog first reported on?the presentation.

The researchers began by looking at the data such a security system generates when it looks at an iris ? various measures such as patterns, striations, the size of certain features, all produce a unique "password" that, until this week's presentation, was only able to be replicated?by the eye that produced it.

Once they had that output information, they created an iris image and scanned it through the system, then modified it and looked at whether it produced results that were more or less like the target iris's ? which, again, they have no actual image of, just this metadata. They kept changes that seemed to make their iris more like the target, and threw away changes with a negative effect. After 100 or 200 iterations and less than 10 minutes, the algorithm produces a simulated iris that will reliably scan in as the one that's still safe inside some user's eyeball.

Right now the research assumes that whoever is trying to beat the iris scanner has access to the codes that scanner would generate from a real iris. (In this case, the team used codes made public for research purposes.) In reality, those would hopefully?be carefully protected and encrypted, meaning it would be another security task entirely to get hold of them. But unlike a password, you can't just scrap your eyeball and get a new one.?If a single large user?database was breached, this technique could render thousands, or even millions, of irises insecure in an?instant.

In-place systems, such as those in some airports and other secure facilities, likely have additional security measures, like guards who might notice someone holding up a printout of an eye to an iris scanner. But the mere possibility of falsifying an iris successfully is enough to put the users of such biometric security systems on edge.

Shift work linked to increased risk of heart attack and stroke

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? Shift work is associated with an increased risk of major vascular problems, such as heart attacks and strokes, concludes a study published on the website of the British Medical Journal.

This is the largest analysis of shift work and vascular risk to date and has implications for public policy and occupational medicine, say the authors.

Shift work has long been known to disrupt the body clock (circadian rhythm) and is associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, but its association with vascular disease is controversial.

So a team of international researchers analyzed the results of 34 studies involving over two million individuals to investigate the association between shift work and major vascular events. Shift work was defined as evening shifts, irregular or unspecified shifts, mixed schedules, night shifts and rotating shifts. Control groups were non-shift (day) workers or the general population.

Differences in study design and quality were taken into account to minimize bias.

Among the 2,011,935 people in the studies more than 17,359 had some kind of coronary event, 6,598 had myocardial infarctions (heart attacks), and 1,854 had ischemic strokes caused by lack of blood to the brain. These events were more common among shift workers than other people: shift work was associated with an increased risk of heart attack (23%), coronary events (24%) and stroke (5%). These risks remained consistent even after adjusting for factors such as study quality, socioeconomic status and unhealthy behaviors in shift workers.

Night shifts were associated with the steepest increase in risk for coronary events (41%). However, shift work was not associated with increased death rates from any cause.

Although the relative risks were modest, the authors point out that the frequency of shift work in the general population mean that the overall risks are high. For Canada -- where some of the study's authors are based and where 32.8% of workers were on shifts during 2008-9 -- 7.0% of myocardial infarctions, 7.3% of all coronary events, and 1.6% of ischemic strokes could be attributed to shift work.

The authors say their findings have several implications. For example, they suggest screening programs could help identify and treat risk factors, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Shift workers could also be educated about symptoms that could indicate early heart problems.

Finally, they say more work is needed to identify the most vulnerable groups of shift workers and the effects of modifying shift patterns on overall vascular health.

Growing up Geek: Philip Berne

Welcome to Growing Up Geek, an ongoing feature where we take a look back at our youth and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. Today we have Philip Berne, who is currently Samsung's Marketing Manager for Technical Media and a regular contributor for Slashgear.

When I was in high school, I wanted to be a writer. My fallback plan was to get a degree in Psychology and become a therapist. If you were to time travel back to my high school days (which were not even 20 years ago) and tell me what I'd be doing today, I'd probably say something like:

"Are you crazy? That's not even a real job. And what the heck is a smartphone, anyway?"

I was a phone and gadget reviewer until I recently took a job with Samsung. Now I'm still reviewing phones -- I just review them a few months before anyone else. If you love phones and mobile tech as I do, it is certainly a dream job. I know how lucky I am. I wouldn't be here unless I had grown up geek. But in fact it wasn't luck that got me here (unless I mean luck of birth).

Growing up geek, in my case, meant growing up spoiled. I'm afraid to admit it, but I certainly had a spoiled childhood, especially when it came to toys and electronics. Let's go through my bona fides.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock hit a new low Friday after it reported lukewarm second-quarter results and didn't give an outlook for the coming months.

The stock fell $3.83, or more than 14 percent, to $23.02 in morning trading Friday. Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering of stock priced at $38, and its low had been $25.52, hit on June 6. The stock is now about 39 percent below its IPO price.

Facebook issued its first financial report as a public company after the market closed Thursday. The company reported slightly stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed.

Although revenue grew 32 percent in the second quarter, growth has slowed from earlier this year and from previous years. That's a concern for a newly public company. Investors are willing to value new companies highly, even if they are not making a profit, because they expect booming revenue.

Baird's Colin Sebastian also pointed out that the company is spending more on technology and hiring, driving up expenses.

But he's not overly concerned. He backed his "Outperform" rating for Facebook, saying advertising revenue was better than expected and the company is improving its ability to make money from users who access Facebook from apps on their phones and tablet computers.

Other analysts remained positive, too. Of 27 analysts available from FactSet, 15 have "Buy" ratings or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.

Mobile and users in developing countries are driving growth in active monthly users, Sebastian said. Facebook had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year ago.

"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," said Citi analyst Mark Mahaney. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."

Analysts also cautioned that the stock could be volatile because Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Overall the company reported a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the April-June period, mainly because of compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago.

The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

Facebook's revenue of $1.18 billion was slightly higher than the $1.16 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

The results came two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ? even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

Researchers studying the star system Kepler-30, which is 10,000 light-years from Earth, found that its three known worlds all orbit in the same plane, lined up with the rotation of the star ? just like the planets in our own solar system do. The result supports the leading theory of planet formation, which posits that planets take shape from a disk of dust and gas that spins around newborn stars.

"In agreement with the theory, we have found the star's spin to be aligned with the planets," said study co-author Dan Fabrycky, of the University of California, Santa Cruz. "So this result is profound because it is basic data testing the standard planet formation theory."

Interactions among planets can later throw such ordered arrangements out of whack, researchers added, creating the skewed orbits seen in many alien systems today. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

Planets crossing starspots

The Kepler-30 system consists of three known extrasolar planets circling a sunlike star. All three worlds ? Kepler-30b, Kepler-30c and Kepler-30d ? are much larger than Earth, with two being even more massive than Jupiter.

The three planets were detected in January by NASA's Kepler space telescope, which has spotted more than 2,300 potential alien worlds since its March 2009 launch. Kepler uses the "transit method," noting the telltale brightness dips caused when a planet crosses, or transits, a star's face from the telescope's perspective.

In the new study, the scientists studied Kepler observations of the extrasolar system even more closely.

Like our own sun, Kepler-30 has starspots, temporary blotches that appear dark because they're significantly cooler than the rest of the star's surface. The research team determined that all three planets transited the same starspot repeatedly, showing that their orbits must be coplanar and aligned closely with the star's spin.

In this sense, the Kepler-30 system looks like our cosmic neighborhood, which sports eight planets all lined up neatly along the sun's rotational equator. Both systems probably formed from a spinning disk of dust and gas, researchers said.

If you thought most of what could be said about Bruce Springsteen has already been said, perhaps reconsider. David Remnick's 15,000-word profile in the July 30 issue of the New Yorker proves that there's a good bit we didn't know about the 62-year old singer. Among the most notable revelations: Springsteen was at one point suicidal and depressed.

His struggles really came to the surface after the success of albums such as "Born to Run" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town."

"Springsteen was also experiencing intervals of depression that were far more serious than the occasional guilt trip about being 'a rich man in a poor man's shirt,' as he sings in 'Better Days.' A cloud of crisis hovered as Springsteen was finishing his acoustic masterpiece 'Nebraska,' in 1982," Remnick writes in the profile. "He drove from the East Coast to California and then drove straight back.

"'He was feeling suicidal,' Springsteen's friend and biographer Dave Marsh said. 'The depression wasn't shocking, per se. He was on a rocket ride, from nothing to something, and now you are getting your ass kissed day and night. You might start to have some inner conflicts about your real self-worth.'"

Remnick, who shadowed Springsteen during rehearsals for this year's Wrecking Ball tour, visited Springsteen's home in Colts Neck, N.J., and even visited the singer on the European leg of his tour in preparation for the piece, writes that in 1982, Springsteen started seeing a psychotherapist to tackle his harder-to-identify issues.

"My issues weren't as obvious as drugs," Springsteen told Remnick. "Mine were different, they were quieter -- just as problematic, but quieter. With all artists, because of the undertow of history and self-loathing, there is a tremendous push toward self-obliteration that occurs onstage. It's both things: there's a tremendous finding of the self while also an abandonment of the self at the same time. You are free of yourself for those hours; all the voices in your head are gone, just gone..."

Ultimately, and after 30 years of therapy, Springsteen is at peace with his darker side, which fuels the talent that makes him precisely who he is. He explains it to Remnick: "Look, you cannot underestimate the fine power of self-loathing in all of this. You think, I don't like anything I'm seeing, I don't like anything I'm doing, but I need to change myself, I need to transform myself. I do not know a single artist who does not run on that fuel. If you are extremely pleased with yourself, nobody would be f------ doing it! Brando would not have acted. Dylan wouldn't have written 'Like a Rolling Stone.' James Brown wouldn't have gone 'Unh!' He wouldn't have searched that one-beat down that was so hard. That's a motivation, that element of 'I need to remake myself, my town, my audience' -- that desire for renewal."
